Aerospace startup AMSL Aero has received $5.43 million in funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency to help develop its hydrogen-powered electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
We were thrilled to have Andrew Moore of AMSL Aero on the podcast back in 2021 in our episode entitled "Zero Emission Aviation: Brissie to the Gold Coast in 10 mins for $10".
Since that time, AMSL AERO has gone from strength to strength!
In 2022 they raised a $22 million Series B round from investors such as IP Group and HostPlus. And today it was announced the company are the recipients of a $5.43m ARENA grant. The grant focuses on the hydrogen capabilities of the AMSL Aero aircraft and will enable the company to accelerate design, manufacturing, and certification efforts.
Of course there's lots of active debate about the low carbon future of flight. Is it hydrogen powered, battery powered or neither (for example, using Sustainable Aviation Fuel)?
And for this reason it is a topic we keep coming back to on the podcast.
In our recent pitchfest episode we featured David Doral from Dovetail Electric Aviation and in our Season Four opener we featured Microtau's unique "shark skin" that can help increase the drag of planes, no matter how they are propelled.
AMSL Aero's approach is a unique mix, progressing with both battery and hydrogen propulsion. We're looking forward to departing on our first zero carbon flight and congrats again to the AMSL Aero team!
